Image of the Day: S is definitely for Sassy
Filed under: Image of the DayAs a mother of a girl child, I know this look far too well. This is the one that says she’s got the world in the palm of her hands and she intends to keep it there. She looks confident, secure and ready to do her will; all are qualities every little girl should be so lucky to hold and use as she grows up into a woman. Thank you, veec23, for sharing this delightful picture with us at Image of the Day.February will bring some fun changes at Image of the Day. We will continue to feature as many great reader submitted pictures as possible. However, we will be asking you, the readers, to vote on the images at the end of the month. So keep the pictures coming and get ready to vote, vote, vote! And don’t get bogged down by themes, just show us who you are and how you live with your gorgeous small ones.If you’d like your own picture featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr Pool - We’ll select an image every day to highlight. The budget rocker cradle
Filed under: Gear, Children’s furniture, Cribs and cradles, Beds, CraftsRemember that spiffy combination rocker and cradle I wrote about a while back? A couple of people mentioned that handy types might be able to make one themselves, saving about ten grand. While I’m not very handy, I also don’t have a spare $10k lying around collecting dust. So I was happy to discover that there are indeed plans available to make a similar piece.U-Bild is a website that sells plans for making all kinds of neat stuff out of wood. If you got a passing grade in woodshop (unlike me), you might want to look around the site. The rocker/cradle, however, is pretty cool. For nine bucks and the cost of the wood (and your time, of course,) you can have functionally the same thing as the Scott Morrison version, although the pricier model is a bit nicer in my opinion. This one seems to have the advantage that you could actually leave the baby in the cradle part when you get up, something I definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable doing with the Scott Morrison model.Alas, I think it’s probably too advanced for my meager skills, but I’d love to hear if anyone makes one of these and how it works in practice.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Is tonsil removal a thing of the past?
Filed under: health and Safety, Doctor’s office When I was a kid I got strep throat constantly. I had it so much, in fact, that one year I had it six times. It was at that point that my parents considered getting my tonsils removed. Back when we were kids, which wasn’t that long ago when you think about it, tonsil removal was all the rage. As fearful as it was kids were excited by the prospect of eating nothing but ice cream for a week–which I found out later from a friend was rather overrated. For whatever reason, tonsil removal of late seems to have fallen out of fashion. Seems like doctors don’t want to remove tonsils any longer. I rather agree with this sentiment and am glad I still have mine. Turns out tonsils catch all the gross stuff that would otherwise be growing elsewhere in your body. Right around the time I hit puberty I stopped getting strep. Even if anyone else around me got it I never seemed to get it. It was as if I’d built up an immunity to it. Cue the entrance of a baby at daycare and bam, twenty years later I have step again. Thank goodness for antibiotics. There are still a few things I don’t understand, though. Strep doesn’t generally grow on the tonsils, it grows on the throat. This thought is confirmed on the WebMD.com website, where I and others I know spend way too much time wondering if our symptoms are something deadly or relatively benign. On WebMD, it could go either way. So if strep mainly grows on the throat and not on the tonsils, like, say, tonsillitis, which I’ve recently had right along with strep, why remove the tonsils? My guess is I’ve lost some nugget of into along the way. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but is strep not the most painful thing that could happen to your throat, ever? It’s like having someone operate a chainsaw inside your throat. I haven’t had strep in twenty years but it still hurt just as badly as it did when I was a kid, if not worse. Had you told me last week when it hit me (and hence partially the reason for my absence on the board) that removing my tonsils, or any part of my body for that matter, would cure me of the strep I would’ve sharpened the surgical instruments myself. And then eaten a LOT of ice cream, even if it is overrated.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
