Brooke Shields feels like the ‘odd mom out’
Filed under: Celebrity babies, Celebrity kids, Celebrity parentsI have always admired Brooke Shields. Besides being gorgeous and smart, she’s managed to navigate the rocky road of stardom without turning into a tabloid joke. Tom Cruise might disagree, but I think she was blessed with a common sense that seems to be lacking in many celebrities.Comparing her own stage mother to those of today’s tabloid princesses, she tells Redbook in the September issue, “People used to say my mom used me as a commodity. But you know what? She did her own version dysfunctional behavior, sure, but nothing like you see these days.” Classy as ever, she doesn’t mention any names, but admits she has no advice for young, out-of-control Hollywood starlets, saying “I don’t want to say anything to them. I want to talk to their mothers.” At 42, she’s a mother herself to two daughters - Rowan, 4, and Grier, who turned 1 in May - and clearly takes her job as a parent seriously. “I always feel like the odd mom out, because trust me when I tell you I’m on my girls. And every time I am, I know from the outside it looks like I’m an overbearing, controlling parents. But I don’t think we have any responsibility to anybody else but our kids and ourselves.” Amen to that.Something tells me we won’t be seeing Rowan and Grier in a future “girls behaving badly’ special on VH1.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Salma Hayek is a realistic portrayal of a pregnant woman
Filed under: Pregnant celebrities, Celebrity babies, Celebrity styleI know there is so much pressure in Hollywood to be thin and fit, but sometimes it seems that expectant mothers take that a step too far and barely look pregnant even when they are about to give birth. Angelina Jolie looked thin everywhere on her body other than the cute, round bump when she gave birth the wee Shiloh in Zamibia. Although Katie Holmes had a whopping baby bump, the rest of her appeared to stay svelte as ever. Currently Nicole Richie is tiny as can be at 4 1/2 months pregnant. But the ever curvy and sexy Salma Hayek looks like an everyday, glowing pregnant woman as she approaches her due date.Snapped recently as she was shopping in Hollywood, the actress not only appears to be light in her step, she is absolutely gorgeous with her heavy curves and a belly ready to burst. I love it that she looks proud and entirely at ease as she steps out on the town. Thank you to Salma Hayek for showing that women can expand during this time and still feel beautiful!Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Best shows about school — like, ever!
Filed under: Elementary school, Middle school, High school, College, Private school, Going to school, TelevisionLet’s face it — for most of us — school sucked the big one. The only thing that makes me fondly look back at my school days are TV shows about someone else’s school days. The best combo, of course, is shows about school that I watched while I was actually in school. 90210 anyone? So I found this list of 21 Best School TV Shows to be pretty thorough. Though I might not agree with their ranking order, I’m finding it hard to say that they’ve missed a show. (Growing Pains? Happy Days? Fresh Prince? But most of those shows didn’t spend a large amount of time in the classroom.) All the greats are here, from Saved by the Bell to Head of the Class and those one-season wonders: My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks.Anyway, I’m especially pleased to see that Canadian teen hit Degrassi Junior High made the list. This was a quintessential show for me because it was the first to tackle real teen issues like rape, abortion and drug use. The show was never preachy and continues to make waves and represent the teen school experience with The Next Generation. What were your favourite school shows?Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
