Adoption site: no gays allowed
Filed under: Adoption, 2Moms2Dads, In the newsMaking the choice to adopt requires a big commitment. You really have to be prepared and know what you’re getting into. It’s not something that can happen by accident or in the heat of the moment. In New York, you can even get certified as “Qualified Adoptive parents” by the New York City Surrogate Court. That’s what Rosario Gennaro and Alexander Gardner did. When they went online to register with parentProfiles.com, a website that lists prospective adoptive parents’ information, however, they ran into an unforeseen obstacle — discrimination. You see, Adoption Profiles, LLC, the company that runs the website, limits profiles to “Qualifying Husband and Wife Couples”.The same company chose to stop doing business in California rather than take on the state’s antidiscrimination laws after being sued in 2004. Now they may have to give up New York as well — Lambda Legal, a national, non-profit, civil rights organization, has filed, on behalf of Gennaro and Gardner, a discrimination complaint with the New York attorney general’s office. It’s a shame that someone would let their prejudice get in the way of finding a loving home for a child that needs one. “We are committed partners who can provide a loving home for the child,” says Gennaro. It’s too bad that Adoption Profiles won’t let a child into that loving home. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
baby smiles affect the brain like drugs
Filed under: Newborns, Babies, Development, In the newsWhen it comes to describing a baby’s smile, words like “addictive” and “intoxicating” are frequently used to explain the feeling those gummy rays of happiness have on exhausted parents when they finally appear on baby’s face at around 6 weeks of age. A recent study has people marveling just how accurate those descriptors were. When new mothers were shown photographs of smiling infants, the picture of their own smiling baby triggered a surge of dopamine in their brain, the same chemical the body produces when a person uses drugs, alcohol, or nicotine. These findings of the study may assist scientists in understanding why some mothers fail to bond with their children and lead to early treatment. Unattached parents can lead to children suffering from abuse or neglect. So when Huey Lewis sang about wanting a new drug, it turns out all he really needed was a baby! Amanda Peet, who will soon be appearing in a a pro-vaccination video, likely stirred the pot a little more with her recent comment to Cookie magazine.”I was shocked by the amount of misinformation floating around,” she said, “Particularly in Hollywood. Driver keeps mum on baby’s sex, daddy
Filed under: Pregnancy & birth, Bump watch, Life & style, Rumors, That’s entertainment Actress Minnie Driver is refusing to play the Hollywood game with her pregnancy. Unlike some stars, who finally give in the the pressure of the media, Driver is refusing to comment on the sex of her baby. She’s also sticking to her guns and not revealing who the baby daddy is. Naturally media tongues are wagging with rumor, but Minnie will not satisfy them. The actress, who is set to give birth any minute now, doesn’t know the sex of the baby, which makes it easier to keep that item a secret. Apparently the suspense is killing her, too (although she seems to think the baby is a girl)! Driver also revealed she has no plans for a C-section, stating she isn’t “looking for any type of intervention.” Good luck, Minnie! Time will certainly tell what the sex of the child is, but who knows if we’re ever going to find out who the daddy is. Who knows–maybe she’ll keep it up and the answer to that will be one of life’s great unresolved mysteries. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Church cancels teen gun giveaway
Filed under: Teens & tweens, health & safety, Weird but true, Religion & spiritualityI used to teach in an area where school shut down for two days once a year for hunting season and where gun safety classes were practically an extra-curricular activity. So I realize that there are some instances where a responsible teen, under reasonable adult supervision, may have a reason for handling a gun. I can’t think of any good reason, however, to put a semiautomatic assault rifle into the hands of a teen who may or may not have the knowledge or supervision to handle it correctly. But that’s what Windsor Hills Baptist church was planning to do as a incentive for teens to come their youth retreat. Organizers say that a shooting competition was part of last year’s event, and that a gun had been given away then too.The giveaway has been canceled, not because someone finally grew some common sense, but because an event organizer couldn’t attend. Maybe I just don’t know enough about guns. Can someone explain this to me? Is this appropriate? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
